Mexico became the first nation to seal a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 to finish top of Group A.
The hosts endured a frustrating opening half and were met with boos from some supporters at the break after struggling to break down a disciplined South Korean side. However, they found the breakthrough five minutes into the second half through Luis Romo.
South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu failed to hold onto what appeared to be a routine ball, and Romo reacted quickest to the mistake, pouncing on the loose ball and calmly finishing from close range to hand Mexico the lead.
South Korea dominated possession for much of the contest and pushed hard for an equaliser, but Mexico remained compact defensively and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
The visitors came closest to levelling in stoppage time when Cho Gue-sung found space inside the box, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced an outstanding save to preserve Mexico’s advantage and send the home crowd into celebration.
Mexico looked more composed after taking the lead and managed the closing stages effectively as South Korea searched desperately for a breakthrough.
The narrow victory ensured Mexico topped Group A and became the first team to confirm their spot in the knockout rounds, where they will continue their World Cup campaign in Mexico City.
