Afrobeats star Davido has spoken about the value of education, insisting that schooling remains important despite claims by some people that education is a scam.
The singer, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Babcock University in 2015, said he takes pride in being a graduate and often reminds his colleagues that he went to school.
During a visit to his alma mater, Davido also announced plans to invest in the institution’s music department by building a modern facility equipped with world-class music equipment to support the training of future talents.
According to him, creativity and music have become major industries in Nigeria, making it necessary to properly equip young people interested in the field.
“The music department is what I want to expand. I feel like it should be a standalone building,” he said.
“I just personally built an office in Lagos, it’s a high-class, standard music studio, so we are ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper, standard equipment because music is oil right now in Nigeria.”
Reflecting on his time in school, the singer revealed that discipline was one of the biggest lessons he gained from the university experience. He also recalled how his busy music career almost affected his education before he was encouraged to complete his studies.
“Sometimes, I’ll be like, auntie, I’m leaving, I’m leaving, I’m going but she will say David, be patient and just finish, and I ended up finishing,” he said.
The singer also encouraged Nigerian youths to stay committed to their talents and remain passionate about whatever career path they choose.
Welcoming him during the visit, the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Afolarin Ojewole, praised the singer for his global achievements and described him as a proud ambassador of the institution.
