The Edo State Government has temporarily shut down three public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area after receiving security warnings about a possible attack targeting students.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School.
The directive was announced in a circular dated June 9, 2026, issued by the State Ministry of Education and signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.
According to the ministry, the decision followed intelligence reports and alerts from the Department of State Services (DSS) concerning an alleged plan to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo North Senatorial District.
The circular, addressed to the principals of the affected schools, stated that the government approved the closure as a precautionary measure to protect students, staff and surrounding communities.
The statement read: “Consequently, and in line with the Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, approval has been granted for the temporary closure of the affected schools with immediate effect.
“All academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools are hereby suspended with immediate effect and shall remain so until further notice from the Ministry.
“However, candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision as may be provided by the relevant security agencies and community stakeholders.”
The ministry explained that while normal school activities have been suspended, arrangements have been made to ensure that students sitting for WASSCE can continue their examinations safely under the watch of security personnel and community leaders.
Officials said the closure will remain in force until the security situation improves and further directives are issued by the government.
