France secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Paraguay 1-0 in a tightly contested Round of 16 clash.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the match was widely expected to pit France’s attacking strength against Paraguay’s defensive discipline, and both teams delivered a competitive contest.
France dominated possession from the opening whistle, patiently moving the ball around the pitch in search of openings. However, Paraguay remained well-organised at the back, denying the French attack clear opportunities with a disciplined defensive display.
Paraguay also looked dangerous on the counterattack, using their speed to trouble the French defence on several occasions, but neither side managed to find the breakthrough before halftime.
As the contest became more physical, France’s Bradley Barcola was shown a yellow card in the 19th minute. Despite enjoying most of the ball, France struggled to turn their dominance into meaningful chances, while Paraguay held firm to ensure the teams went into the break level.
Paraguay made attacking changes early in the second half in a bid to shift the momentum. Juan Canale replaced Omar Alderete in the 58th minute, while Gabriel Caballero came on for Julio Enciso three minutes later to strengthen the midfield and attack.
France answered with a substitution of their own, introducing Désiré Doué for Barcola in the 61st minute to inject fresh energy into their frontline.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute when Kylian Mbappe calmly converted a penalty, rewarding France’s persistent attacking pressure and giving his side a crucial advantage.
Mbappe’s goal forced Paraguay to commit more players forward as they searched for an equaliser, while France focused on protecting their slender lead to book their place in the last eight.
