Governor Ademola Adeleke and several top government officials were on Wednesday involved in an incident after a stage collapsed during a political rally in Ijebu-Jesa, Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State.
The event was organised for the inauguration of canvassers for the governor’s re-election campaign and had in attendance party leaders, supporters and members of the state executive.
Governor Adeleke arrived at the venue alongside his entourage and was received by the campaign council spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, before joining other dignitaries on the stage.
The platform, however, became overcrowded as aides, appointees and security operatives gathered on it. The situation escalated when the governor stood to acknowledge supporters, prompting simultaneous movement on the already stressed structure.
The combined movement reportedly destabilised the stage, which eventually collapsed under the weight.
Governor Adeleke, his sister Modupe Adeleke-Sanni, Chief of Staff Kazeem Akinleye and other officials fell during the incident.
Security personnel quickly intervened and assisted in evacuating the governor from the scene.
Following the collapse, the programme was abruptly brought to an end.
