The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, has disclosed how he “technically resigned” from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari before the end of the government’s tenure.
Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation under Buhari, said his decision to further his education led him to reduce his presence at the ministry to just one day a week.
Speaking in an interview with AIT on Wednesday night, the former Rivers State governor said he sought Buhari’s permission to return to university, which the former president granted.
Amaechi served as Transportation Minister from November 2015 until May 2022, when he resigned to contest the APC presidential primary election.
Recalling the conversation with Buhari, Amaechi said: “The next day, I went back to Mr President and asked, “Can I go to the university? He said, ‘Yes.’
“Then I applied. In the application, I said I wouldn’t be in the office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, that’s technically resigning from the government. The only day I came to the office was Wednesdays.”
Amaechi said the arrangement allowed him to pursue his studies while still maintaining a limited presence in the office during the period.
