Acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill has died at the age of 78.

The actor, best known for his memorable performances in Jurassic Park and The Piano, reportedly died suddenly in Sydney. His family announced the news in a statement shared on his official social media page on Monday.

Neill had revealed in 2023 that he was battling angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His family, however, said he had remained cancer-free before his death and did not reveal the cause.

During a career spanning several decades, Neill became one of the most respected actors of his generation, earning worldwide acclaim for his roles in both blockbuster films and critically acclaimed productions.

His death marks the end of a remarkable career that helped shape the international success of Australian and New Zealand cinema.
