Katsina United has officially confirmed the death of Chinedu Uzor, days after the player collapsed during a pre-season fixture against Niger Tornadoes.
Uzor, who had recently joined the club, fell unconscious while playing at the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday.
He was rushed to two different hospitals, where doctors reportedly pronounced him dead. However, his family remained hopeful that he was still alive, leading to his body being taken to the Intensive Care Unit at the state’s General Hospital.
The development later generated reports that Uzor had shown signs of life after being taken to the morgue.
Katsina United has now clarified that the player never regained consciousness, explaining that the movement reportedly noticed was what gave his family hope during the heartbreaking ordeal.
The club said the family’s refusal to give up hope should not be interpreted as evidence that Uzor survived.
“They were a family desperately hoping that somehow, against all odds, their loved one was still with them,” the club stated.
“He did not regain consciousness. He passed away.
“We know how difficult this is to accept. We know many people are still trying to process what happened. His teammates are grieving. His friends are grieving. The club is grieving. And somewhere, a family is facing a pain that words cannot begin to describe.”
