Kenneth Okonkwo has reacted to the ₦5 billion defamation demand issued by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, saying he will respond in full after reviewing the legal letter.

In a statement, Okonkwo said he was aware of the circulating pre-action notice but dismissed it in strong terms, describing Obi as “hypocrite” while questioning the motive behind the lawsuit.

He said: “It has been brought to my notice that there is a letter circulating online from the hypocrite, Peter Obi, and his lawyers that I should pay him N5b… If Peter Obi is looking for money to campaign, he should privately ask me for assistance… I did so when I was his spokesperson paying for my flight tickets and booking for my hotel accommodation to some of our campaigns.”

Okonkwo added that he had not yet read the document but would issue a formal response once he does.

He also warned that, as a former spokesperson, he may disclose sensitive information if provoked further, stressing that he would not use confidential information against Obi unless pushed to do so.

“My principle is that I do not use any confidential information I share with anyone against the person except the person who becomes unintelligent enough to tow the line of foolishness,” he stated.

He maintained that suing a former spokesperson was unwise and said he is not intimidated by the legal threat, adding that a detailed reply would follow after he studies the letter.
