Kidnappers who stormed a church during an attack in Eda Oniyo in Ekiti State have reportedly contacted families of the abducted worshippers, demanding a ransom of ₦1 billion for their release.

The Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Joseph Awolola, confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying the abductors had made direct contact and insisted they were still hiding within the community’s forest.

“They told us they want ₦1 billion. They are also telling us that they are still on Eda land,” the monarch said in an interview with AIT, as tension continues to rise in the area.

The incident followed a violent raid on a church during an evening crusade, where armed men reportedly opened fire, killed the pastor leading the service, and abducted several worshippers, including women and children.

Following the attack, traditional rulers in neighbouring communities have urged an immediate suspension of night church activities, warning that late-hour religious gatherings are exposing residents to increased security risks.
