The Kwara State Government has filed a criminal defamation case against former Senate President Bukola Saraki over allegations that he made false claims regarding Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s educational background.

The suit was filed before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Ibrahim, alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ayoola Akande, and Assistant Chief State Counsel, B.L. Abdulsalam.

When the matter came up on Wednesday before Justice M.O. Folorunso, court documents revealed that Saraki allegedly published statements on April 17, 2026, via social media and newspaper platforms, claiming that Governor AbdulRazaq did not complete secondary school education.

The state government described the claims as false, malicious, and aimed at damaging the reputation of the governor and the administration.

It further argued that the publications contained abusive and inflammatory language capable of provoking public unrest and disturbing peace, in violation of Section 399 of the Penal Code, Cap. P4, Laws of Kwara State, 2006.

During proceedings, prosecution counsel R.O. Balogun urged the court to issue a bench warrant against Saraki, stating that he failed to appear in court despite being duly served with court processes.

He also opposed an adjournment request from the defence, insisting that the prosecution was ready to proceed with the case.

However, Saraki’s counsel, Jimoh Mumini (SAN), challenged the court’s jurisdiction and argued that his client was not properly served with the relevant processes.

He maintained that the case falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court and therefore should not proceed in the state high court.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Folorunso stood down the matter briefly before ruling that Saraki was entitled to an adjournment.

The case was subsequently adjourned to July 3, 2026, for the hearing of a preliminary objection and possible arraignment.
