Minister of Works Dave Umahi has spoken publicly about the death of Mary Habila, a nurse who died at a staff guest house within his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, insisting that she was “like a daughter” to him and denying any suspicion of foul play.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Umahi said Habila had lived and worked with him for about three years and had been receiving treatment for an existing medical condition, with him personally covering her hospital bills.
“The lady in question is like a daughter to me. She stayed with me for three years. She was a staff of the Federal Medical University. She was a nurse and not a physiotherapist,” Umahi said.
He further disclosed that Habila spoke with her boyfriend shortly before her death and complained that she was bleeding from the nose.
“She spoke to her boyfriend at the hour of her death and complained that she was bleeding from the nose… Three minutes later, the boyfriend called again. She was not responding,” he said.
Umahi maintained that he suspects no foul play and called for a forensic autopsy to establish the exact cause of death, urging investigators to examine the phone records between Habila and her boyfriend.
