Spain moved a step closer to World Cup glory after edging Belgium 2-1 on Friday to book a place in the semifinals.
Mikel Merino once again emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute after capitalising on a rebound spilled by Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens. It was the second consecutive knockout match in which the 30-year-old netted a late winner, having also struck the decisive goal against Portugal in the Round of 16.
Fabian Ruiz had given Spain the lead in the 30th minute before Charles De Ketelaere equalised for Belgium, ending Spain’s clean-sheet run at the tournament.
The victory sends Spain into a blockbuster semifinal clash against France, with both sides set to face off on Tuesday.
