Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in a competitive final played in Salzburg on Wednesday.
The Champions League holders took the lead after 20 minutes through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who kept his composure to finish and give PSG the advantage.
Villa grew into the match and were rewarded just before the interval when 17-year-old Brian Madjo struck in the 45th minute. The young striker met John McGinn’s cross at the far post and volleyed home to make history as the youngest player to score in the UEFA Super Cup.
Madjo had earlier been presented with two opportunities but failed to convert either, sending one effort wide and heading another over the bar.
The match also marked the end of the teenager’s lengthy wait for competitive football with Villa. Madjo joined the club from Metz for £10m in January but was unable to be registered after FIFA imposed a ban. Villa later won an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in early August, clearing him to play.
PSG eventually restored their lead in the 62nd minute when Desire Doue found the net, with VAR checking and confirming the goal after an offside review.
Aston Villa refused to give up and continued searching for a second equaliser, but PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov came up with several key saves to keep his side in front until the final whistle.
The triumph gives PSG back-to-back UEFA Super Cup victories after they claimed the trophy for the first time last year, beating Tottenham on penalties.
