Real Sociedad lifted the Copa del Rey trophy after edging Atletico Madrid 4-3 on penalties, with goalkeeper Unai Marrero emerging as the match-winner.

Marrero produced crucial saves to deny Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez in the shootout following a thrilling 2-2 draw at La Cartuja Stadium, before Pablo Marin converted the decisive penalty.

La Real burst into action almost immediately, taking the lead just 14 seconds in when Ander Barrenetxea headed home from Goncalo Guedes’ cross.

Atletico responded in the 18th minute as Antoine Griezmann set up Ademola Lookman, who finished neatly to restore parity.

Sociedad regained the lead just before halftime, with Mikel Oyarzabal converting from the penalty spot after Juan Musso brought down Guedes in the box.

Atletico pushed hard and found another equaliser in the 83rd minute when Alvarez fired a powerful strike into the top corner. However, Diego Simeone’s side wasted late chances, as Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso both missed from close range.

Extra time produced more drama, with Musso pulling off a brilliant double save to stop Carlos Soler and Orri Oksarsson, while Alvarez struck the crossbar with a long-range effort.

The match was ultimately decided on penalties, where Marrero’s heroics proved decisive. Although Oksarsson saw his effort saved, Soler, Luka Susic and Aihen Munoz converted successfully before Marin sealed the victory with a confident finish.
