Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has harvested fresh vegetables from her garden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, reiterating her call for Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a way to boost food security.
The harvest, which took place on Monday, was shared by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on X on Tuesday. It marked another successful yield from the vegetable garden established about two years ago under the Every Home A Garden initiative.
The garden produced a variety of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.
After harvesting the crops, the First Lady distributed part of the produce to members of her staff and urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of sharing with others.
Tinubu unveiled the Villa vegetable garden in July 2024 under her Renewed Hope Initiative to promote household farming and help tackle rising food costs.
The initiative was launched alongside the Every Home A Garden competition, encouraging women and families nationwide to grow vegetables in their homes.
Speaking at the launch, the First Lady said the garden was designed to show that even small spaces around the home can be used to cultivate nutritious food while reducing household feeding expenses.
