Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has shared why she believes an artiste’s record label can play a major role in their emotional stability and mental wellbeing.
While speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, the singer reflected on her experience at Mavin Records and admitted she only realized how supportive the environment was after leaving the label.
According to Tiwa, being surrounded by people who genuinely cared about her made dealing with public criticism and online controversies easier during her time at Mavin.
“Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it.”
The award-winning singer explained that the sense of family and emotional support she enjoyed under Don Jazzy is something she now misses.
She noted that working with a foreign label feels more business-oriented, leaving little room for personal connection during difficult moments.
“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part.”
