Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing the club’s most expensive signing after reaching an agreement with Newcastle United for midfielder Sandro Tonali in a deal that could rise to £100 million.
The North London club had an earlier offer of around £80 million turned down but have now returned with an improved package worth an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
The move will surpass Tottenham’s previous transfer record, which was set earlier this week following the £85 million signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has been a long-time admirer of Tonali, having first identified the Italian as a transfer target during his time at Sassuolo when the midfielder was still playing in Serie A.
Although both Manchester City and Arsenal monitored Tonali’s situation, neither club submitted an official bid, leaving Tottenham in pole position to secure his signature.
