Harry Kane produced a match-winning performance as England came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and book their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.
The Bayern Munich striker, who was named Man of the Match, scored twice in the second half to complete England’s comeback after the Three Lions conceded an early goal.
DR Congo made the perfect start when Brian Cipenga found the back of the net in the seventh minute to put the Leopards ahead.
England dominated possession and created several chances but struggled to break through as the Congolese defence held firm. Their persistence finally paid off in the 75th minute when Kane headed in Anthony Gordon’s cross to restore parity.
With four minutes remaining, the England captain struck again, firing home from inside the penalty area to seal a dramatic victory for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Reflecting on the game, Kane praised DR Congo’s goalkeeper for an outstanding display while expressing satisfaction with England’s attacking performance.
“What a crazy game, their keeper made some unbelievable saves in that first half.
“From an attacking point of view, it was probably our best game of the tournament so far. We’re in the part of the tournament where you have to grind wins out, and that’s what we did today,” he said.
