Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that he sought advice from fellow musicians Wizkid and Wande Coal during the early stages of his career on how to balance his education with his growing passion for music.
Speaking in the Afrobeats Documentary, Davido said the two artistes advised him that achieving stardom was the key to being able to leave school and focus fully on music.
According to the singer, he was aware that his father would not support the decision to abandon his education for music. However, after his hit song, ‘Dami Duro’, gained widespread popularity, he found it difficult to continue with his studies.
“I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music.
“They told me the only way was to blow up. I knew my dad wouldn’t allow me, but when ‘Dami Duro’ blew up, I couldn’t continue,” he said.
Davido later returned to school and managed to combine his studies with his music career after reaching an agreement with his father.
As part of the arrangement, he agreed to return to school while being allowed to pursue music, with his father also providing him with a recording studio and giving him express permission to continue his musical career.
Davido eventually graduated from Babcock University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
