Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has expressed strong support for using consensus to select candidates ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the approach ensures parties present electable contenders rather than unpopular choices.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Obasanjo dismissed concerns that consensus might ignore party members’ preferences, stressing that popularity remains central to candidate selection.

“I believe consensus can produce the right candidates because it does not mean leadership ignores the will of the people. It means they consider what the people are saying. No party wants to lose, so they will not pick candidates who risk defeat,” she said.

Obasanjo noted that political parties are focused on winning elections and would avoid nominating candidates without grassroots support.

“Consensus will naturally favour those who can win on the ground. The party will not choose the least popular person in a way that discourages others or alienates the public. I have full confidence that consensus is the right approach,” she added.

The former Ogun Central senator also indicated that the system would work in her favour as she seeks the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Ogun State.
