The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to impose a life sentence on anyone found importing hard drugs into Nigeria if he is elected President in 2027.
Obi made the pledge on Saturday during a town hall meeting with NDC members and supporters in Kaduna State.
The former Anambra State governor said the proposed punishment would apply regardless of the status or position of the person involved.
“If I assume office as President of Nigeria, anybody importing hard drugs will face a life sentence. Our youths have died a lot because of hard drugs,” Obi said.
He also urged politicians contesting the 2027 elections to avoid making campaign promises they would be unable to fulfil if elected.
Peter Obi called on political parties to focus their campaigns on the challenges confronting Nigerians and engage directly with citizens to better understand their concerns.
The NDC candidate further pledged that, if elected President, he would spend his annual holidays in Nigeria rather than travelling abroad.
According to Peter Obi, the President should remain connected to Nigerians and use holiday periods to visit different parts of the country, particularly communities affected by insecurity and other challenges.
He said such visits would enable the President to better understand the conditions facing citizens and remain closely connected to the people.
