Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, as “jaga jaga” while speaking about his first impression of the controversial entertainer.
Obasanjo, however, praised Charly Boy’s late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, describing him as a great man whom he respected.
The former President made the remarks during an appearance on the programme Curiosity Made Me Ask hosted by Isbae U, where he explained why he initially had little regard for Charly Boy.
“Can you see a gentleman who dresses like a woman? A gentleman who dresses like a bush man? Charly Boy is too jaga jaga but he has a good father. Justice Oputa was a great man, how I wish Charly Boy resembled him,” Obasanjo said.
He recalled that Justice Oputa was among the Nigerians he held in high regard during his lifetime.
Obasanjo said his perception of Charly Boy began to change after he visited Justice Oputa at a house he later discovered belonged to the entertainer.
According to the former President, he was initially surprised by what he saw when he arrived at the residence, including a motorcycle parked in front of the house.
However, his opinion changed after witnessing the manner in which Charly Boy cared for his father.
“When I went inside the house, I saw how Justice Oputa was being taken care of and by who? Charly Boy,” he said.
Obasanjo explained that Charly Boy’s dedication to caring for his father eventually changed his perception of the entertainer.
He said Charly Boy continued to take care of Justice Oputa until his death, describing his actions as those of a devoted son.
“So I started changing my mind about Charly Boy and until Oputa died, Charly Boy took perfect care of him and he really behaved like a good child,” Obasanjo said.
