The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed to resist the Federal Government’s plan to establish a United Kingdom university campus in Nigeria.

ASUU President Chris Piwuna made the announcement on Thursday in Bauchi during a public lecture organized by the union’s Sa’adu Zungur University branch. He disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during a recent visit to the United Kingdom, signed an agreement that includes opening a Nigerian campus of Coventry University.

Piwuna criticized the move, calling it an attempt to “re-colonise” Nigeria’s education sector. He highlighted the financial struggles of the UK institution, including a £58 million deficit, declining African student enrollment, and cost-cutting measures projected to reach £100 million over the next two years.

“They deny Nigerians visas to study abroad, yet they want to come here and take our money,” he said.

He emphasized that ASUU will oppose any part of the agreement related to education, noting that it violates the government’s moratorium on new university establishments. “This will not stand. We are going to resist it,” Piwuna added.
