Dutch club Feyenoord have announced the dismissal of head coach Robin van Persie following a disappointing campaign that ended with the team finishing 19 points behind Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven.
In a statement on Sunday, the club described the decision as a difficult one, with technical director Devy Rigaux acknowledging Van Persie’s efforts during his spell in charge.
“Robin van Persie has given everything for the club over the past one-and-a-half years,” Rigaux said, adding that the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker deserved credit for guiding the team to a second-place finish and securing Champions League qualification for next season.
However, Feyenoord said an internal review of the team’s performances, points total, and playing style led to the conclusion that a change in leadership was necessary ahead of the new season.
“The conclusion was that it is better for us to start the next season with a new head coach,” Rigaux stated.
The club confirmed that a replacement will be announced in the coming weeks as preparations begin for the new campaign at De Kuip.
Beyond their domestic struggles, Feyenoord also endured a disappointing European run, after being eliminated from Champions League qualifying by Turkish side Fenerbahce at the final qualifying stage.
