A mild drama unfolded in the Senate on Wednesday after Senator Abdul Ningi entered the chamber carrying a traditional spear, drawing attention from lawmakers and security officials.
The unusual item sparked concern during plenary proceedings, with some members questioning why it had been brought into the legislative chamber and whether it posed a security risk.
As efforts were made to remove the spear, Ningi resisted attempts by officials to take possession of it, insisting that he would handle the matter himself.
“You people should leave it for me, you don’t know the importance of it and what it means,” the senator said.
He further stated: “I will take it away, but I won’t allow the Sergeant-at-Arms to take it. You don’t know the importance of this and what it means. So, go back, I will take it away.”
The incident briefly created tension in the chamber before the senator assured colleagues that he would personally remove the traditional object.
