Leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has reacted to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing his leadership as a failure while blaming Labour Party policies for Britain’s current challenges.
In a statement shared on her official X account shortly after Starmer’s resignation on Monday, Badenoch criticised a range of government decisions, including tax increases, welfare reforms, defence spending, energy policy, and political appointments made under his administration.
She wrote: “Hiking national insurance. The Family Farm Tax. Giving up on real welfare reform. Not funding our defence. Not drilling our own oil and gas. Appointing Peter Mandelson, then lying about what had happened.”
Badenoch argued that the country’s problems were not limited to Starmer personally, but reflected what she described as deeper flaws in Labour’s political direction.
“Britain is not ungovernable. Keir Starmer is a terrible Prime Minister. But the problem isn’t just Starmer,” she said.
She further claimed that Labour MPs prioritise higher taxes and increased welfare spending over economic growth and national development.
“Labour MPs only want higher taxes to hand out more benefits… These are Labour’s choices and their values, regardless of who is running the party,” she added.
Badenoch concluded by calling for a change in leadership direction, insisting that the Conservative Party remains best placed to rebuild the economy and restore growth.
“We need to get Britain working again. We need the Conservatives,” she said.
