Public school teachers in Oyo State have been directed to return to the classroom after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) called off its strike over security concerns.
The union announced that academic activities would resume on Thursday following fresh discussions with the Oyo State Government and assurances that stronger security measures would be implemented after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami.
According to the union, the suspension of the industrial action was based on a directive from its national leadership after assessing the security situation and considering appeals from the state government and other stakeholders.
The strike had been declared in response to the kidnapping of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union said the government assured its leadership that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those abducted and improve security in schools and surrounding communities.
As teachers resume work, the NUT urged its members to remain security conscious, comply with the law and immediately report any suspicious activities or security threats in their schools and communities to the relevant authorities.
