South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, only weeks after he represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports indicate that Adams passed away unexpectedly, although the cause of his death has not been disclosed.
The talented midfielder, who played for Mamelodi Sundowns, made three appearances for South Africa national football team during the World Cup before the team was eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32.
Following the heartbreaking news, tributes have poured in from across the football community. The South African Football Players Union described Adams’ death as a huge loss, noting that he had proudly carried the hopes of the nation on the global stage.
The union extended its condolences to his family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana, and everyone affected by his passing, adding that South African football had lost a gifted player with a bright future.
In a separate message shared on X, SAFPU said Adams would always be remembered for his humility, outstanding talent, and commitment to representing his country.
Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC last summer after rising through the ranks at his boyhood club. Since making his international debut in 2024, he had become an important figure for South Africa.
Just weeks before his death, the midfielder posted a photo on Instagram holding the World Cup trophy with the caption, “Proud moment!”
His partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, had also celebrated his achievement before South Africa’s match against Canada, saying his years of hard work had finally earned him a place on football’s biggest stage.
