AC Milan have announced the dismissal of head coach Massimiliano Allegri alongside several top club officials after the team failed to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The 19-time Serie A champions suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari on Sunday in their final league match of the season, a result that confirmed their absence from Europe’s elite competition.
Allegri, who returned to the club last May for a second spell 11 years after his first departure, was brought in following another failed Champions League qualification campaign.
In a statement, the club’s owners RedBird Capital said expectations were not met and a full restructuring was now necessary.
“After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A,” the statement read.
“It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations.”
The club confirmed the departure of CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, head coach Massimiliano Allegri, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
“Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course, with the goal of being ready and well prepared for the next season,” the statement added.
