Arsenal have taken a major step towards signing Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães after agreeing a £75 million transfer fee with the Magpies.
The Brazil international is now expected to undergo a medical after reportedly receiving permission to travel, bringing him closer to completing a switch to the Emirates Stadium.
Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Arsenal and Newcastle had reached an agreement over the transfer, with Guimarães cleared to proceed with the next stage of the move.
The 28-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers since arriving from French side Lyon in January 2022. During his time at St James’ Park, he became club captain and played a crucial role in the team’s resurgence, including their return to European competition.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified midfield reinforcement as a priority ahead of the new campaign, with Guimarães valued for his passing range, ball-winning ability and influence in attacking situations.
For Newcastle, the deal represents a significant financial return on one of the club’s most influential players.
The transfer is expected to be completed once the midfielder passes his medical and finalises personal terms with Arsenal.
