The Senate has approved constitutional amendment bills seeking to establish state police in Nigeria.

The bills were passed on Wednesday after lawmakers considered the proposal on the floor of the upper chamber.

Before voting commenced, senators agreed to use a manual voting process after the electronic voting system developed a technical fault.

The decision was taken amid concerns that some lawmakers could be prevented from voting if the faulty device was used.

Under the manual process, each senator was required to stand, announce their name and openly state their position on the proposed state police framework.

The motion for the adoption of manual voting was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and was subsequently adopted by the chamber before the bills were passed.
