The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of an application challenging the revocation of his bail and the issuance of a bench warrant against him.
Justice Mohammed Umar made the order on Monday after ruling that Sowore should remain in custody until the court hears and resolves the motion seeking a stay of the earlier directive.
The court also dismissed an application filed by Sowore requesting the judge’s recusal over alleged bias, holding that the claim lacked sufficient merit.
The case was adjourned to June 24 for hearing of the motion for stay, which was filed by his new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN.
Sowore, who is the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, had earlier appeared in court accompanied by supporters carrying placards shortly after the revocation of his bail.
On June 16, Justice Umar revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear in court for his ongoing trial and subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest following an application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN.
The DSS is prosecuting him over allegations of making false statements against President Bola Tinubu, including referring to him as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X and Facebook accounts.
