Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has cautioned Nigerian youths against spending their time following politicians around, especially as political activities begin to heighten ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Tuesday, Adeyanju said many young people waste valuable years attaching themselves to political figures instead of focusing on personal development or building sustainable livelihoods.
He argued that such a lifestyle rarely leads to long-term success, noting that even some of those who manage to secure political appointments often still struggle financially.
He advised youths to invest in education and small-scale businesses rather than political loyalty.
He said:
“Go back to school and get a MSc or PhD. Don’t waste 4 more years doing nothing.
“It’s better to buy a deep freezer to be selling ice block as a side hustle than following Nigerian politicians up and down. Do something tangible with your life.
“Nothing will come out of following politicians around. Almost all the people I know following politicians up and down since 2010 are still poor and jobless.
“The ones in government following politicians around are also hungry and can barely pay their bills.
“Following politicians up and down doesn’t end well generally.”
His comments have generated reactions online as debates continue over youth participation in politics and economic survival strategies.
