Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory in dramatic fashion on Sunday, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver and move to the top of Group G with four points from two matches.

After a disappointing first half, the Pharaohs produced a stunning turnaround led by Mohamed Salah, whose 67th-minute strike proved to be the winning goal. The victory was a landmark moment for Egypt, who had failed to win any of their previous World Cup matches despite appearing in four editions of the tournament.

New Zealand struck first in the 15th minute when Finn Surman found the back of the net, sending Egypt into halftime trailing 1-0.

However, the African champions emerged a different side after the break. Mostafa Ziko restored parity in the 58th minute before Salah completed the comeback nine minutes later with a clinical finish that sparked wild celebrations among Egyptian fans.

Substitute Trézéguet wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute, ensuring Egypt claimed a famous 3-1 win and strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Egypt, three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, had never previously tasted victory at the World Cup. Now sitting atop Group G with four points, they are on the verge of qualifying for the round of 16, where a meeting with the United States could await.

Elsewhere, Uruguay and Cabo Verde shared a 2-2 draw, Iran held Belgium to a goalless stalemate, while Spain cruised to a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.
