The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned content creators, social media users and members of the public against the indiscriminate recording and online sharing of police operations, saying such practices could compromise security activities and discourage officers in the line of duty

Disu expressed concern over what he described as an increasing trend of filming police officers during routine and sensitive assignments and circulating the footage online without proper context.

He made the remarks during an interactive session with Crime Correspondents in Abuja on Sunday, where he stressed that while accountability and transparency remain priorities for the police, they must be pursued responsibly.

“Yes, accountability is important, and we remain committed to transparency.

“However, recordings and public engagements involving police officers must be done responsibly and should not be used to harass officers or undermine operational effectiveness.”

According to him, the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding human rights and ensuring transparency, but public scrutiny must be balanced with operational demands and officers’ welfare.

He noted that police personnel continue to operate under difficult and often dangerous conditions, adding that they deserve protection from actions that could discourage their commitment.

“Police officers operate under extremely challenging conditions, often risking their lives to protect citizens and maintain public safety.

“It is important that public conduct and media coverage do not discourage officers who are committed to doing the right thing,” he stated.
