Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran as the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has criticised the current administration, claiming that Islam’s global image is being harmed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
He made the remarks at a political event hosted by the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), under the leadership of its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
During his address, Baba-Ahmed described the issue as sensitive but important, noting that such conversations are often avoided.
“There’s a question you wanted, but let me take the liberty, if you are afraid to ask it,”
He acknowledged the weight of his comments, saying:
“It’s not easy for me to say this… but it must be said.”
He went on to state, “the world of Islam has never suffered reputational damage as under Tinubu, Shettima presidency,” arguing that leadership in many Muslim-majority nations has traditionally been associated with justice and stability.
Despite his criticism, he clarified that his comments were not meant to elevate religion above competence, but rather to stress the importance of sincerity in leadership.
“This is not about religion. If you are presenting religion, then present genuine candidates who will govern by the dictates of their faith.”
He added that credibility should be the standard for leadership, regardless of religious background.
“If you are bringing a Christian, we want a genuine Christian. If you are bringing a Muslim, we want a genuine Muslim,”
