The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for emergency repairs and safety inspections.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
According to him, the affected stretch covers the Apongbon axis to Ijora Olopa outbound toward Lagos Island.
Osiyemi explained that the decision was made to enable urgent structural evaluations and maintenance works aimed at safeguarding motorists and preserving the bridge’s structural integrity.
Motorists heading toward Lagos Island were advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair exercise.
He, however, stated that the inward carriageway leading into Lagos Island would remain open throughout the period of the repairs.
“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists,” he said.
The commissioner also assured residents that traffic control measures had been put in place to minimise congestion and ease vehicular movement along diversion routes.
He added that traffic officials and security personnel would be stationed at strategic points around the affected areas to guide motorists and maintain order.
“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Osiyemi stated.
He appealed to road users to cooperate with authorities and exercise patience while the repairs last, stressing that the intervention was necessary to ensure public safety and protect critical transport infrastructure in the state.
