Manchester United have moved a step closer to building a new 100,000-capacity stadium after purchasing most of the land required for the project near Old Trafford.
The club had made little public progress since minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe unveiled the ambitious redevelopment plans in London in March 2025, although discussions over land acquisition had been ongoing behind the scenes.
According to reports, United have now secured a triangular stretch of land between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way, close to the car parks behind the Stretford End. The acquisition gives the club access to a 25-acre site considered sufficient for the proposed stadium development.
However, final plans, design details and overall project costs are yet to be agreed, with further negotiations still required with some existing leaseholders in the affected area.
The development also coincides with political changes in the region, as Andy Burnham, a key figure behind the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), stepped down as Greater Manchester Mayor after being sworn in as an MP.
