The Chief Executive Officer of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, has raised concerns about the quality of talent available in Nigeria’s job market, sparking wide discussions online.

Speaking about the company’s recruitment process, he disclosed that despite having over 500 open positions since 2024, the firm has struggled to find suitable Nigerian candidates who meet required standards for global-level roles.

“I used to feel Nigerians are really bright. We have had over 500 vacancies since 2024, and we are still struggling to find Nigerians to fill those roles. They don’t meet global standards. I blame social media, yahoo & hook up culture,” he said.

According to him, the challenge is not the absence of applicants but a mismatch between available skills and the expectations of modern, competitive workplaces. He suggested that changing societal habits and distractions may also be affecting productivity and employability among young people.

The comments have since generated mixed reactions. While some agree that there is a widening skills gap in the country, others argue that deeper issues such as education quality, economic hardship, and limited access to proper training opportunities are the real causes.

As Nigeria continues to grow its tech and innovation sector, the remarks have reignited conversations about the need for stronger skill development, better training systems, and improved alignment with global industry standards.
