The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has expressed confidence in its ability to host a successful Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

The controversy stems from CAF’s ruling that awarded Morocco the AFCON 2025 title after overturning Senegal’s 1-0 win in the final on January 18. Senegal walked off the pitch for 17 minutes in protest against a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco. CAF’s Appeals Committee cited Article 82, which states that any team leaving the field without the referee’s consent forfeits the match, resulting in Morocco being handed a 3-0 victory—their first AFCON title in 50 years.

Senegal has rejected the decision and confirmed it will challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In a statement on Wednesday, the FRMF clarified that its aim is not to question the sporting merit of the final but to uphold the rules, fairness, and integrity of African football.

“Following the initial decision, which the FRMF appealed, CAF has acknowledged that the rules, known to all and applicable to all, had not been respected,” the statement read.

The federation highlighted that it followed proper procedures, presenting arguments and participating in all hearings, and said the ruling provides clarity for similar situations in the future.

“The FRMF will continue to work with continental and international bodies to ensure the fair application of competition rules. Our focus now turns to upcoming events, including the FIFA World Cup and the Women’s AFCON this summer,” the statement added.

The Moroccan FA also commended all nations that participated in AFCON 2025, reaffirming its commitment to fair play and the growth of African football.
