Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejorin, has been released by the police after nearly 24 hours in custody following Saturday’s shooting in Ilesa.
The commissioner was taken into custody while officers investigated a shooting that occurred during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Ilesa West Local Government Area.
According to the police, tactical officers responding to the incident later stopped a white Lexus 350 carrying an Amotekun operative and another occupant. The occupants were taken to the police headquarters in Osogbo for questioning, where the other passenger was identified as Adejorin.
Police said the shooting left three people injured, including 14-year-old Tobi Ilesanmi, who was reportedly shot around the Isokun area.
Investigators also recovered four spent cartridges and a pump-action gun in connection with the incident.
The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed on Sunday that Adejorin had been released after questioning. However, he said he was still unable to confirm whether the Amotekun operative arrested alongside the commissioner had also been released.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released today but the Amotekun that was arrested with him, I can’t confirm his release yet because I am still gathering my facts,” Ojelabi said.
Ojelabi had earlier explained that the commissioner was identified after the vehicle was intercepted and its occupants were taken to the command headquarters.
“On intercepting the vehicle, they saw an Amotekun personnel in the vehicle. So they apprehended the vehicle, the personnel and one other person in the vehicle. They brought them straight to the headquarters here. On interrogation, it was discovered that the other occupant is Honourable Mayowa Adejorin,” he said.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
