Tensions remain high in Oyo State following the abduction of students and teachers from communities in Orire Local Government Area, as uncertainty continues over efforts to secure their release.
The situation has dominated public discourse, with the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Debo Ogundoyin, reiterating the state government’s firm stance against negotiating with the armed group responsible for the attack.
During plenary, Ogundoyin stressed that while the government remains committed to bringing back the abducted victims safely, it will not engage in negotiations with criminals.
He said:
“The government would do anything necessary for them to bring the children and the teachers back and not negotiations. If it were to be left for you, would you negotiate if terrorists ask for weapons, money, and conception of future laws of the country would you have accepted?”
Despite the public position, there are indications within legislative discussions that the abductors may have made certain demands tied to the release of the victims, although officials have not confirmed any details.
The abduction, which occurred on May 15 in parts of Oyo State, has continued to spark anxiety among families and residents as they await concrete updates on rescue efforts.
While authorities maintain a tough public posture, the unfolding situation suggests that behind-the-scenes efforts may still be ongoing to secure the safe return of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
