Public school teachers in Oyo State on Monday staged a protest calling for urgent action following the recent terrorist attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The demonstration came days after armed men on motorcycles invaded communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis in Oriire, Ogbomoso, abducting students and staff from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.
The attack reportedly claimed the lives of an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven teachers were kidnapped, while the exact number of missing pupils is still being verified.
He also disclosed that a video received by the state government confirmed the killing of one of the abducted victims, a mathematics teacher.
During the protest, teachers gathered in large numbers, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they appealed to security agencies and the state government to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims and improve security in the area.
Some of the placards read: “Their deaths demand action,” “Say their name, remember their sacrifice,” and “Noble teachers gone too soon.”
