The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Gbenga Adepoju, has ordered the arrest and detention of officers seen in a viral video allegedly extorting money from a motorist.
In the footage, two policemen were seen inside a vehicle belonging to a motorist, while another officer stood outside collecting an undisclosed amount of money. The officer was also seen returning the victim’s vehicle documents after the exchange.
Reacting to the incident, Adepoju condemned the conduct, describing it as unprofessional and unacceptable. A statement released on Tuesday via the command’s spokesperson, Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed that an investigation had been launched.
The statement noted that the officers involved have been identified as ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and others, adding that disciplinary action has already commenced.
“The Rivers State Police Command has taken cognisance of a video and reports circulating on social media alleging that ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other police officers were involved in extorting money from members of the public while carrying out their duties.
“The command views the allegations with utmost seriousness, as such conduct is inconsistent with the core values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force. Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered their arrest, detention and immediate investigation of the allegation.
“The Commissioner of Police reiterates that extortion, illegal collection of money and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
Adepoju further assured that the investigation would be transparent and impartial, adding that any officer found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary measures under the Nigeria Police Act.
He also appreciated members of the public for reporting misconduct and encouraged continued reporting of cases involving corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional behaviour through official complaint channels.
