Residents of Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into panic on Sunday night after a student hostel reportedly collapsed, raising fears that several occupants could be trapped beneath the debris.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred shortly after a loud sound echoed through the area, prompting students and nearby residents to rush outside in alarm.
One witness recalled:
“We heard a loud bang, and within seconds people were screaming for help. Everyone rushed out to see what had happened.”
Videos and photos shared online showed a massive crowd surrounding the collapsed building as emergency responders, students and local residents worked together in a desperate search for possible survivors. Volunteers were also seen removing rubble to aid the rescue operation.
At the time of reporting, officials had not confirmed the number of casualties or whether anyone had been rescued from the wreckage. The cause of the building collapse had also not been established.
Rescue efforts were still ongoing as emergency personnel continued combing through the debris, with authorities expected to release more information after preliminary investigations.
