Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of planning to freeze the bank accounts of the state government and some senior officials ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, speaking on behalf of the governor.
According to the statement, the state government received information indicating that the EFCC intends to place restrictions on all government accounts in the lead-up to the election.
Adeleke also claimed that the accounts of top government officials are expected to be affected, warning that such action would disrupt the day-to-day running of the state.
He alleged that the move was designed to weaken his administration by bringing government activities to a halt before residents head to the polls.
“The plot to freeze the state government accounts is meant to paralyse government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election,” the statement said.
The governor argued that the EFCC lacks the legal authority to freeze the accounts of a state government, insisting there is no constitutional basis for such a decision.
He further warned that any attempt to carry out the alleged plan would represent an abuse of power and could seriously hinder governance during the election period.
