The Federal Government has unveiled a new National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools in Nigeria, in a move aimed at improving the quality and consistency of educational materials used in classrooms.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the initiative was described as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen standards in the education sector and eliminate substandard textbooks.

According to the ministry, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will continue to serve as the body responsible for approving textbooks, but a new ranking framework will now be introduced to further assess approved materials.

Under the system, textbooks will undergo a structured evaluation process to determine their suitability, quality, and alignment with the national curriculum.

The statement explained that Standing Subject Committees, made up of education experts, will be established to review and rank textbooks based on academic and pedagogical standards.

Only a select number of top-performing textbooks will be approved for use in schools, with the aim of ensuring greater uniformity and improved learning outcomes across the country.

It further stated that any textbook not ranked under the new system will no longer be permitted for classroom use, regardless of previous approval status.
