Super Eagles midfielder Alexander Iwobi has expressed deep appreciation to Nigeria and fans across the world for their constant support throughout his international career, as he closes in on his 100th appearance for the national team.

Iwobi is expected to reach the milestone when Nigeria face Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday in an international friendly.

The Fulham star said he is proud of his journey with the Super Eagles and grateful to everyone who has played a role in his development since his debut in 2015.

“I am proud to be where I am today, proud to wear the green and white. I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria.”

He made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium, on October 8, 2015, and has since grown into one of the team’s key figures.

Iwobi also reflected on his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria, saying he always felt at home with the Super Eagles.

“I first went to the Nigeria U23 team camp and felt at home. I had represented England at youth level but always felt Nigeria was home. My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football and make the decision that I felt was good for me.”

Looking ahead to his milestone appearance, Iwobi said he does not consider himself a legend but feels honoured to have served the national team for nearly a decade.

“After 10 years and eight months, I won’t say I am a legend; I only see myself as a Super Eagles player. It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I could add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles.”
