Nollywood actor IK Ogbonna has opened up about how the death of his close friend and colleague, Alexx Ekubo, changed his outlook on life, saying the painful loss forced him to confront questions he had never asked before.
In a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, IK said nothing could have prepared him for losing Alexx on May 11, adding that the past two months have been spent trying to understand life, loss and God.
“On May 11th, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that,” he wrote.
Reflecting on the experience, IK said people often see ambulances or hear news of someone’s death and quickly move on because they believe the tragedy is happening to someone else.
“You never truly understand the weight of death until it’s your own person inside that vehicle. Until the phone stops ringing forever. Until the chair beside you remains empty,” he said.
He added that Alexx’s passing made him question why people keep putting off important things in life.
“Losing Alexx forced me to ask myself questions I’d never really asked before. Why do we postpone love? Why do we postpone forgiveness? Why do we postpone phone calls?… Tomorrow is a privilege. Not a promise.”
IK also recalled the dreams they shared, including growing old together, building businesses, making movies and travelling the world, saying neither of them imagined one would leave so soon.
Despite the pain, the actor said he has found comfort in his faith, believing God’s wisdom is greater than human understanding.
Urging people to value their loved ones, he wrote, “Love people while they can still hear you. Tell them you appreciate them while they can still smile back. Forgive quickly. Call your parents. Check on your friends… Live intentionally.”
He ended the emotional tribute by thanking Alexx for his friendship, support and the memories they created together, writing, “Live intentionally. Love completely. Tomorrow is never promised. To my brother, today, tomorrow, always.”
